In 1572, the Takeda forces defeated Tokugawa forces in the Battle of Mikatagahara. However, the following year, the strongest warlord, Takeda Shingen died of illness. His son, Katsuyori sent assassins to Hamamatsu to attack Tokugawa forces before they could recover.

What is a ‘ Sengoku warlord’ ? He was a feudal lord who fought against other warlords to protect his own territory and to become the leader of Japan from around 1400 to 1600. In the end, Ieyasu Tokugawa unified Japan and began the Edo Era, a peaceful age that lasted for about 300 years.

Even today, Japanese people still love the warlord from their hometown, so Takeda,Tokugawa’s enemy, is stll a hero in Yamanashi and Nagano.

Ieyasu Tokugawa was born in Aichi Prefecture and grew up in Shizuoka Prefecture. In the end, he established the Edo Government , became shogun and brought the Sengoku period to an end.

He had a deep relationship with both Aichi and Shizuoka. When he lived in Hamamatsu in his thirties , he was still weak, so there are some stories about local citizens helping him.

Shingen Takeda was born in Yamanashi Prefecture. He is called  the Tiger of Kai which is now Yamanashi. He was one of the strongest warloads in Japan. People said, ‘ When Shingen takes action, he absolutely wins.’  He was the only person who ever defeated Ieyasu Tokugawa. He is still one of the most popular warlords in Japan. He was also good at controlling floods and building castles. The embankments Shingen built still protect people in Yamanashi today.

Tokyo has some place names that come from Hamamatsu because Ieyasu lived in Hamamatsu for many years. For example, ‘ Hamamatsucho ‘.  The second shogun, Hidetada Tokugawa was born in Hamamatsu. He built Zojo Temple in Tokyo, and the area where the temple was built was named ’ Hamamatsucho’ after his birthplace.

And then there is Akihabara. ‘ Mt. Akiha ‘ stands along the Tenryu River in Hamamatsu. It is believed to be the home of the fire god who protects people from fires.  When a big fire broke out in Edo, people evacuated to an open field. It was said that the god of Mt.Akiha protected them there, so people began to call that field Akihabara−the field( hara) where Mt.Akiha’s god protected people.
